The Evolution of Anti-Mormonism
Introduction
This article, “The Evolution of Anti-Mormons,” is written primarily for the non-member of the LDS Church who is being blasted with anti-Mormon materials. Secondarily, it is written for the current anti-Mormons who have not taken a close look at their position and the history of their position.
I highly dislike putting down other people's beliefs nor do I like contending with other people’s religion. This article will be getting close to doing both. But in defense of Joseph Smith and our religion, this information will try to put a light on the true intentions of the anti-Mormons and be a gauge for the sincere Christians who are really trying to defend their truth.
This truth is “either Joseph Smith was a liar, a deceiver, a ravenous wolf lying in wait to deceive” or “these anti-Mormons who produce all the information that you have read about Joseph Smith are the liars, the deceivers, and the ravenous wolves.” Both cannot be right…one must be wrong.
A question for the non-member of the LDS Church is:
What is your magic number of lies that have to be told before you believe a person or a certain position is a liar and a deceiver?
or... How many lies does one have to tell before you are convinced that particular person (Joseph Smith) or those particular people (the anti-Mormons) are the liars, the deceivers, and the ravenous wolves?
Your responses and feelings to these pieces of facts and evidence will reveal how sincere your heart is in following the true and just Lord of the Bible.
It is the position of most anti-Mormons that the archeological evidence does not support the Book of Mormon. The anti-Mormons throughout the history of the foundation of the Church, since the 1820’s, have made the following or similar accusations:
- Accusation #1: Nobody could have seen or talked with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ—the heavens are closed! Further more nobody could have seen God and lived!
- Accusation #2: Nobody wrote on gold plates or any other type of metal. The ancient people always wrote on scrolls.
- Accusation #3: Nobody in the history of the world ever hid things in stone boxes.
- Accusation #4: There was never two races or a white race in America.
- Accusation #5: There have been no Book of Mormon cities found in the Americas.
- Accusation #6: There are no large areas of population found that match the Book of Mormon cities.
- Accusation #7: Christ never came to America.
- Accusation #8: There is not any character out of the Book of Mormon that is supported by current archeological evidence.
- Accusation # 9: There were no horses in the Americas until the Spanish arrived and introduced them.
- Accusation #10: There is not any evidence in the ancient history of the people of the Americas having steel making abilities.
One main fact that I feel is necessary to mention is that at the time of Joseph Smith and his revealing of the Book of Mormon, all the anti-Mormon accusations listed above were not lies. In my limited knowledge, I believe that at the time of Joseph Smith, all the historical knowledge that is listed above supported the accusations of the anti-Mormons. In simple terms, the anti-Mormons, at that time, were not lying about the available archeological facts that they used in their attempts to discredit Joseph Smith.
Each one of these topics will be discussed in this article. It is not my intention to point out who were liars. It is my intention to point out the true intentions of their hearts, both Mormons and anti-Mormons!
